*All instructional technology workshop participants will be awarded Continued Learning Units (CLUs) for participation. 1hr = 1CLU - Certificates will be awarded quarterly. Participants may earn 1.0 CLU for each hour since we will be actively engaged in high quality, structured professional development activities with clear goals and objectives and identifiable outcomes.
Professional Development Outline 2009-2010 Job-embedded professional development has been planned for the 2009-2010 school year, taking place very frequently throughout the school year during daily teacher planning periods. Teachers conduct research and meet in cluster groups to acquire best instructional strategies for all subject areas, to improve students' composition skillls, and to infuse the arts and technology into instruction. Afterschool and Saturday trainings are offered as well.
TAP The Teacher Advancement Program (TAP) model provides weekly Staff Cluster Group Meetings, Professional Development, and Curriculum Conferences focusing on the instructional strategies designed to promote proficiency in using the best practices of teaching and reading. Teachers will become more knowledgeable about the best practices of teaching reading (i.e. Cycle of Effective Instruction, Cooperative Learning Cycle, and Reading and Word Strategies that will be evident in their classroom instruction). They will demonstrate their understanding of reading strategies through model lessons that will be observed by the Master Teachers. The observers will use a checklist to observe teachers four times during the school year to assess the effective use of strategies in the classroom.
Monthly PD - Mathematics All PreK-8th math teachers will be trained during monthly PD and/or cluster meetings in instructional strategies designed to promote knowledge in using problem solving strategies and steps to solve mathematical problems. Teachers will become more knowledgeable about teaching mathematics for meaning and learning, which will be evident in their classroom instruction. (i.e. Teachers as facilitators, teachers teaching mathematics concepts through exploration of problem solving steps and strategies, teachers providing opportunities for students to construct their own meaning, teachers using instructional aids and technology to enhance instructional delivery). They will demonstrate their understanding of the problem solving strategies and steps through model lessons that will be observed by the Master, Mentor teachers, and Administrators.
Special Education - Inclusion Improving the performance of Special Education students is vital in Martin Behrman’s quest to improve our AYP. The working relationship among regular education teachers of special needs students and Special Education Inclusion Teachers is evolving and being strengthened so that students will receive the proper feedback and instruction. The master and mentor teachers will provide quarterly staff development workshops that focus on including students with disabilities in the classroom with the use of differentiated instruction. Teachers will become more knowledgeable about inclusion practices for students with disabilities. They will demonstrate their knowledge of inclusion by presenting sample differentiated lesson plans, sharing reflections of focus group readings and discussion, completing an evaluation, and keeping a journals or written reflections on the trainings.
