State Assessment Guides
What Is the Purpose of the Assessment Guide?
Each Assessment Guide provides an overview of LEAP at grade 4 or grade 8. In addition to
providing teachers with a description of the overall design of the LEAP or iLEAP
assessments, each guide presents sample test items to aid teachers in aligning their
instruction with the statewide assessments. Teachers should use this guide to
• become familiar with the LEAP and iLEAP test format,
• include these types of formats in their classroom instruction and assessments,
• align their instruction and assessment with the Louisiana Content Standards, Benchmarks,
Grade-Level Expectations, and the Comprehensive Curriculum, and
• provide test accommodations recorded on a student’s IEP or IAP.
What Does the Assessment Guide Include?
The Assessment Guide includes information that all teachers can use to understand the
purpose and structure of the LEAP or iLEAP and how the assessments affect teaching and
learning in Louisiana. Each guide contains information about the four core-content areas
that are assessed on LEAP or iLEAP. The guides include information about
• test specifications,
• test content (key concepts),
• sample test items,
• achievement level descriptors, and
• scoring.

interactive, self-paced, challenging, engaging activities. Activities promote exploration,
individual and cooperative learning, problem solving, reflection, and real-world connections.
Odyssey applies current and confirmed research about how student think and learn.
These computer-based benchmark Tests are given in the Fall (Pre-test) and again in the
Spring (Post-test). Some teachers elect to use Compass tests as a pre- and post-test for
each unit of study. Click here for Compass Testing Website.
DIBELS (for more info, visit www.dibels.com/faqs.html)
This Reading assessment for grades Kindergarten through Third takes place 3 times per
year: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized,
individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be
brief, fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early
reading skills. The measures were developed to assess students in each of the basic early
literacy skills, a set of recognized and empirically validated skills related to reading
outcomes. In the area of beginning reading, basic early literacy skills include phonological
awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, vocabulary, and
comprehension. Each measure has been thoroughly researched and demonstrated to be a
reliable and valid indicator of early literacy development and predictive of later reading
proficiency to aid in the early identification of students who are not progressing as expected.

How It Works: "Assess, Report, Teach (then repeat!)"
The Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA) is an early childhood assessment
system that helps teachers focus classroom instruction to achieve the greatest learning
gains for each child. This software is linked to immediately generated reports and helps
teachers and administrators gain essential insights about each child's understanding of
Language Arts and Mathematics concepts. What we like best of all, it that these
assessments are independently completed by students, allowing our teachers to spend
more time teaching instead of grading and administering tests!
Children's Progress has designed their computer assessments with the learning cycle in
mind. Immediately after we assess our students, we can view a useful snapshot of their
progress. We can generate easy-to-use reports for teachers and administrators and even
print out some targeted teaching activities for tutors and parents. This software helps us to
tailor instruction based on what our students need most.
